The area was subsequently settled by European settlers in the 1800s, with the establishment of a number of towns and villages in the region, including Southampton and Port Elgin.
The town of Saugeen Shores was officially incorporated in 1999, through the amalgamation of the villages of Southampton and Port Elgin, and the Town of Saugeen Shores. This merger brought together the three communities that make up the present-day municipality of Saugeen Shores.
Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area experienced steady growth and development, driven by the expansion of agriculture and the arrival of new settlers. In the following years, Saugeen Shores' economy was mostly based on agriculture and fishing, later on, tourism has become the main economic driver for the town.
