A Little history about West Grey

West Grey has a rich history that dates back to the early days of European settlement in the region. The area was first surveyed in the 1830s, and the first settlers arrived in the 1840s. The municipality was officially established in 1852 and was named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom at the time.

The early economy of West Grey was based on agriculture and logging. The municipality was home to a number of sawmills and grist mills, which were powered by the numerous streams and rivers in the area. As the population grew, a number of small towns and villages developed, including Durham, Hanover, Neustadt, and Walkerton.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, West Grey was home to a number of important industries, including textiles and machinery manufacturing. The municipality also had a strong tradition of craftsmanship, with a number of skilled artisans and tradespeople working in the area.

West Grey has also played an important role in the history of Canada, with a number of significant events taking place in the municipality. For example, the Battle of Durham was fought in the area during the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, and the Walkerton E. coli outbreak in 2000 was one of the most significant public health crises in Canadian history.

Today, West Grey is a mix of urban centers, small towns, and rural areas that offer a wide range of recreational activities and heritage sites like the Durham Heritage Centre, Grey Roots Museum and Archives, and many more.
