History Of Port Elgin

Port Elgin, Ontario is a town located in Bruce County on the shores of Lake Huron. The area around Port Elgin has been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous peoples and was later visited by French fur traders and explorers in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1851, the first permanent settlers arrived in the area, and the village of Port Elgin was officially established in 1866. The town was named after James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin, who was the Governor General of Canada at the time.

Port Elgin quickly grew and developed as a major commercial and transportation hub, thanks to its location on the shores of Lake Huron and its proximity to the Saugeen River. The town became a popular destination for tourists and vacationers, and a number of hotels and resorts were built in the area.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Port Elgin's economy was primarily based on agriculture and fishing, but it soon developed into a popular summer resort destination. The town's economy was also boosted by the arrival of the railway in the late 1800s, which made it easier for people to travel to and from Port Elgin.

Today, Port Elgin is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, parks, and marina, and it continues to be an important economic and cultural center in Bruce County.
