The history of Saugeen Shores dates back thousands of years when the area was first inhabited by indigenous peoples. The Ojibwe and other indigenous groups lived in the region, fishing and hunting for their sustenance.
In the early 1800s, European settlers arrived in the area and established several communities, including Port Elgin and Southampton. The region became an important hub for shipping and trade, with ships carrying timber, grain, and other goods across Lake Huron.
In the mid-1800s, the area saw the construction of several lighthouses to aid navigation on the lake. One of the most notable is the Chantry Island Lighthouse, which was built in 1859 and still stands today as a popular tourist attraction.

In 1998, the towns of Port Elgin and Southampton, along with Saugeen Township, were amalgamated to form the town of Saugeen Shores. Today, the town continues to thrive as a tourist destination, with a strong economy and a vibrant community.
