History Of Saugeen Shores

The area now known as Saugeen Shores has a rich history dating back thousands of years, with evidence of Indigenous people living in the region for at least 10,000 years. The Ojibwe and other Indigenous groups used the area for fishing, hunting, and trading.

The first European explorers arrived in the area in the 1600s, and the French were the first to establish a permanent settlement in the region. In the late 1700s, the British took control of the area and established a fur trade post at the mouth of the Saugeen River.

In the mid-1800s, the first permanent settlers arrived in the area, and the town of Southampton was founded in 1858. The town quickly became a hub for shipping and commerce, with lumber, fishing, and shipping industries driving the local economy.

Port Elgin, located just to the north of Southampton, was founded in the late 1800s as a railway town. The arrival of the railway brought increased tourism to the area, with visitors coming to enjoy the beaches, fishing, and natural beauty of the region.

In 1998, the towns of Southampton and Port Elgin, along with the surrounding rural areas, were amalgamated to form the new town of Saugeen Shores. Today, Saugeen Shores is a thriving community with a strong sense of history and tradition and is a popular destination for tourists and visitors looking to experience the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of the area.
