History Of Meaford
Meaford, Ontario has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Anishinaabe people, who fished, hunted, and farmed the land.
In 1835, the first European settlers arrived in the area, led by John Muirhead, who established a sawmill and gristmill on the Bighead River. The settlement grew quickly, and by 1845, a post office, hotel, and several stores had been established.
In 1872, the town was officially incorporated as the Town of Meaford, named after a village in Scotland. By this time, the town had become a major shipping port for lumber and agricultural products, with ships regularly sailing from Meaford to ports along the Great Lakes.
In the late 1800s, Meaford was also known for its booming shipbuilding industry. Several shipyards were established in the town, producing steamships and schooners that were used to transport goods across the Great Lakes.
Throughout the 20th century, Meaford continued to evolve and grow.
