History Of Durham

Durham, West Grey has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. The town was originally known as "New Durham," after the city of Durham in northeast England, and was settled by Scottish, English, and Irish immigrants.

One of the earliest settlers in the area was John Bowerman, who arrived in 1825 and built a sawmill on the Saugeen River. Other settlers soon followed, and by the 1830s, the town had grown into a bustling community with several mills, stores, and a post office.

In 1854, the town was officially incorporated as Durham, named after the city in northeast England. The railway arrived in Durham in the 1870s, which further spurred growth and development in the area.

Durham continued to grow throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the construction of new buildings, schools, and churches. The town was also home to several manufacturing businesses, including a foundry, a furniture factory, and a cheese factory.

Today, Durham remains a vibrant community with a strong sense of history and tradition. Many of the town's historic buildings and landmarks have been preserved, and the town celebrates its heritage with events like the Durham Fall Fair and the Durham Heritage Festival.
